Lifequake alert...
I have some news to share
In 2024 and 2025, while running my business, publishing a novel, writing two and a half more, being CEO of home, and taking care of my physical and mental health (ha!), I was also back at uni completing post-grad studies in Libraries and Information Management. No wonder I’m tired. 🤪
Back to lifequakes:
A couple of years ago, I wrote a blog post that the GA gods tell me remains one of my most popular ever, and it had nothing to do with communications or writing, but about lifequakes. Here’s the blog post, but as I wrote, coined by Bruce Feiler, lifequakes are basically big changes that lead to a life transition. Sometimes we choose them, sometimes they choose us. Think relationship changes, travel, milestone birthdays, losing a loved one- basically stuff that feels a bit like a life disrupter. With lifequakes can come a sense of vulnerability and of loss, but on the flip side of a lifequake is the chance to reimagine and rebuild our lives, shed beliefs and habits and build new ones with excitement for the possibilities and potential of the blank page on the other side.
In 2023 I had a bit of a lifequake of my own. I turned 50. I went to France with la maman (who had been terribly, scarily unwell the year before), my biz clocked over a decade and my unpublished novel (at that point in time!) won a national prize. As I stood in the magnificent building housing France’s National Library, I was hit by a metaphorical lightning bolt: it was time to tear shit up a smidge.
And now I’m a qualified librarian working part-time in a beautiful school library putting books in kids’ (and teachers’) hands. It’s the perfect alignment of my strengths, my passions, my expertise, my experiential diversity, and, not insignificantly, my values.
I’m so excited for the year ahead, writing-wise, library-wise and can’t wait to be back in your substack feed or your inbox, sharing more about my writing, what’s floating my boat and what’s happening in my world. Of course, I always want to hear about all of the above from you.
Love,
Holly x
